Our Climate Controlled Storage Units Protect Your Wood Furniture

September 15, 2015 by Cindy Gunnin

Whether you’re renovating your home, downsizing, or moving into a new place where you can’t take all of your furniture, you might need to put some of your furniture in storage. Our drive up storage units in Oaks offers climate control for your belongings right off Montgomery Avenue. While our spaces are climate controlled, there are still a few things you should do when storing any of your possessions and wood requires special handling if you want to avoid scratches, cracks, or mold.

  1. Treat the wood before storing it because if it dries out, it’s more susceptible to cracks. Treat your wood furniture with furniture polish, which adds moisture, before storing it.
  2. Climate control makes a big difference and that’s why we decided to make all of our storage units in Oaks climate controlled! Temperature changes can cause wood to expand and contract, which over time can impact the look and strength of the piece. Your wood furniture will also be protected from humidity in our climate controlled storage units so that they won’t mold and mildew.
  3. If you decide to skip a climate controlled storage unit and instead store your wood furniture in your home basement or attic, consider buying a dehumidifier, humidifier, or humidistat.
  4. If your wood furniture can be disassembled, take it apart before you store it. For example, you might take the legs off a wooden chair or take the drawers out of a wooden bureau. This will allow you to make better use of storage space while ensuring that each individual piece is protected.
